Why you will love them
- Sugar free - These chocolate banana brownies are naturally sweetened with just bananas and a little maple syrup - although you can leave that out if you don't want it as sweet. No added granulated sugar, so they are refined sugar free.
- Easy - This banana brownie recipe is so easy to make, and you probably already have the ingredients in your kitchen to make them.
- Adaptable - Use this recipe as a base and then adapt it with some of the add-ins we have included below.
- Kids love them - I haven't met a kid that doesn't like brownies and even though these are a healthier version, my kids love them. It's definitely a brownie that I feel good about giving to my kids.
- Gluten and grain free - These are flourless, so they are gluten and grain free.
Ingredients and substitutions
- Bananas - This is where most of the sweetness comes from, as well as the fudgey texture. You want to make sure that you are using really ripe bananas, as this will make them extra sweet.
- Egg - These help to bind the brownies. If you wanted to make these vegan, you could use a flax egg, but this would change the texture.
- Nut butter - We used cashew butter, but any nut butter would work. We love the combination of chocolate and peanut butter too. Adding nut butter makes these banana brownies protein packed.
- Liquid sweetener - For some added sweetness in this banana brownies recipe, we added a little maple syrup. You could leave this out if you want a less sweet and more bitter flavor.
- Cocoa powder - This is where the chocolate flavor comes from. Use an unsweetened cocoa powder. Or, you could use cacao powder instead.
- Vanilla extract - This adds a lovely warm flavor and also helps to bring out the sweetness.

Variations
There are a few ways that you can change up these banana brownies to make them a little different every time. If you want to make them a little more indulgent, then add some dark chocolate sugar free chocolate chips to the mixture and they will add little melty bits when the brownies are served warm.
You can add some extra flavor with some orange or mint extract, as they pair really well with the chocolate. Make sure to use extract and not essence, as essence has a real chemical flavor. A pinch of cinnamon adds a lovely extra warmth too.
You could also add in some chopped nuts or dried fruit which adds a nice mixture of texture.
Storage
Store: Allow these chocolate banana brownies to fully cool and then they will keep in an air tight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you want to keep them for longer, then they will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Freeze: These freeze really well. Individually wrap the banana brownies and then put them in a freezer bag and they will keep for up to 3 months.
Defrost: You can defrost them in the fridge overnight.
Reheat: If you want these brownies made with bananas to be a little warm, then put them in the microwave for 20 seconds.
Top Tips
- To make these banana brownies more presentable, you could put a swirl of nut butter on the top of them.

- Let the chocolate banana brownies cool completely before cutting.
- If you prefer a cakier brownie, then you could add a teaspoon of baking powder to the mixture.
