A rich and silky Chocolate Yogurt that tastes far more indulgent than it actually is, and it's sugar free too. This is an easy chocolate yogurt recipe made with Greek yogurt and cacao or cocoa powder and some optional add-ins. Great for a sugar free dessert, and impressive enough to serve at a dinner party.

Four pots of chocolate flavored yogurt surrounded by raspberries and chocolate chips.

This chocolate Greek yogurt is so simple to make, it's barely even a recipe. You just mix everything together and it's ready to serve. No chopping, no prep, no cooking. It's ready in just a couple of minutes.

This is a nutritious way to satisfy a chocolate craving. If you are looking for some more low sugar chocolate recipes, then why not try our easy Brownie Baked Oatmeal, healthy Chocolate Banana Brownies or our simple Chocolate Covered Dates recipe?

    Why You Will Love Them

    • Nutritious - When those chocolate cravings hit, this yogurt with chocolate is a nutritious way to satisfy it. Protein packed Greek yogurt makes this a filling dessert. This has 12g of protein per serving.
    • Adaptable - Use this recipe as a base and then adapt it with different flavors and toppings. We have some suggestions for you below.
    • Impressive - This is a seriously impressive looking (and tasting) dessert considering how easy it is to make. Serve it in little pots and it's impressive enough to serve to guests at a dinner party.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed for this recipe with text overlay labels.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

    • Yogurt - We used Greek yogurt because it is nice and thick and gives a real pudding feel, and it is protein packed as well. It will help to you to keep fuller for longer.
    • Cacao powder - This is where the chocolate flavor comes from. We used cacao powder because it is known to have a higher antioxidant content than cocoa powder. Cacao is the purest form of chocolate you can consume, which means it is raw and much less processed than cocoa powder, but you could use cocoa powder instead.
    • Liquid sweetener - You could leave this out, but we wanted ours to be a little sweeter, so we added a little maple syrup to still keep it refined sugar free. You could use honey instead, or another liquid sweetener like stevia drops (remember that you only need a tiny bit). Taste it and adjust the sweetness to suit your own taste.
    • Chocolate chips - We used sugar free dark chocolate chips to keep this refined sugar free. You could swap them for cacao nibs, but we found that with the cacao powder it was a little too bitter. You could also leave them out, but we like the added texture.
    • Vanilla extract - Make sure you are using extract and not essence. A little bit goes a long way and it adds some warmth and helps to bring out the sweet flavors.

    Variations

This chocolate yogurt recipe is really simple (which is what we love about it), so there aren't too many ways to adapt it. However, if you want to add some extra flavor, then mint or orange go really well with chocolate. Add a little orange or mint extract (not essence).

You can also get really creative with how you decorate these. We went with some raspberries and chocolate chips, but other berries like strawberries or blueberries look nice, or you can add some banana slices.

Instead of chocolate chips, you could add some cacao nibs if you like the bitter flavor, or some desiccated coconut. Add some crushed peanuts or a drizzle of homemade peanut butter for a Snickers vibe. It's nice with some low sugar granola if you wanted it for breakfast.

    Step by Step Instructions

All the ingredients for this recipe in a bowl.
    1. Step 1: Put all of the ingredients into a large bowl. Mix well.
Chocolate yogurt in four glass ramekins.
    1. Step 2: Divide between ramekins and chill for 30 minutes.

    Chocolate Yogurt Bark

On a hot day, one of our favorite lighter treats is frozen yogurt bark and you can make it with this recipe. Double this recipe and then spread it out over a lined baking sheet. Top with fruit and nuts and then put in the freezer for 2 hours until firm. Use a knife to break it into pieces and serve frozen.

    Top Tips

    • Make sure to really whip the chocolate yogurt to make it nice and silky smooth and it helps to make sure there is no clumps from the cacao powder too. You could always sift the cacao powder.
    • Add a pinch of cinnamon to add a lovely warm flavor to the chocolate yogurt.
    • You could swap the cacao powder for a chocolate protein powder which would give this even more of a protein boost.
    • Allow the mixture to sit in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving. This lets it thicken a little, and also brings all the flavors together.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What yogurt to use?

We use Greek yogurt because it is nice and thick, as the whey has been removed - this makes it the perfect texture for this recipe. You can use non fat, 2% or whole milk Greek yogurt. Just avoid the flavored yogurts as they usually have added sugar.

How to make dairy free chocolate yogurt.

This recipe is naturally gluten free and low carb. But, if you want to make it dairy free, then swap the Greek yogurt for a plant based yogurt that is nice and thick. You will need to make sure that the chocolate chips you are using are dairy free too.

    How to store chocolate yogurt.

These are great for making in advance and then keeping in the fridge for breakfast/dessert throughout the week. You can portion it out and store in air tight containers/jars and they will keep in the fridge for up top 5 days. Just don't add any toppings until just before serving.
