You can't beat homemade Strawberry Compote and this 4 ingredient recipe is made using frozen strawberries making it budget friendly and perfect for when strawberries aren't in season too. Bursting with berry flavor, this recipe for strawberry compote has so many uses.

A bowl of yogurt, granola and strawberry compote.

Whether you're topping pancakes, oatmeal, yogurt, or using it as a filling for baked goods, this refined sugar-free strawberry compote is a delicious and wholesome alternative to store-bought syrups and jams which are loaded with ingredients you really don't want. It's always part of our weekly meal prep as our kids love it on everything!

Unlike traditional recipes that rely on white sugar, this version is naturally sweetened with maple syrup (or honey), meaning you really just get the taste of those amazing strawberries. It's so easy to make this strawberry compote recipe, as there are just a handful of ingredients and a few simple steps.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed for this recipe each with a text overlay label.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

    • Strawberries - Frozen strawberries are used in this low sugar strawberry compote. I make this all through the year and in the winter when strawberries are not very flavorful, using frozen berries is a much better option. They are cheaper too.
    • Water - Just a little bit of water helps the strawberries to soften up quicker. Don't be tempted to add any more than a splash, otherwise the strawberry compote will be too runny. You wouldn't need this if using fresh berries.
    • Maple syrup - The strawberries add a lot of sweetness, but I like to add a little bit more with a little maple syrup. You could use honey or another refined sugar free liquid sweetener.
    • Lemon - Not only does this help to enhance the color of the berries, it adds acidity to help balance the sweetness.

    Variations

You can make this compote with any berries. To make it really budget friendly, use a bag of frozen mixed fruit, which is usually filled out with with small red berries, like redcurrants, which are cheap. That can make this a really cheap and nutritious addition to your families diet.

    1. Step 2: Gently heat and keep stirring until the strawberries start to soften. Once softened, mash the strawberries down and continue to heat until it thickens.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Breakfast Boost: Spoon this healthy strawberry compote over pancakes, chia pudding, overnight oats, waffles, oatmeal, or yogurt for a naturally sweet touch.
    • Dessert Drizzle: Use it as a topping for ice cream, frozen yogurt, cheesecake or sponge cake. All low sugar versions of course!
    • Healthy Spread: Spread it on toast, bagels as a healthier alternative to traditional jam. Add some peanut butter with it too for a delicious combo.
    • Baking: Swirl it into muffin batter, use it as a cake filling, or pair it with whipped cream as a cake topping.

    Top Tips

    • Choose Ripe Strawberries: If you are going to use fresh berries, the riper the berries, the sweeter the compote .
    • Adjust Sweetness: Taste the mixture as it cooks and add more honey/maple syrup if needed. You might not want it as sweet, or you might like it sweeter.
    • Blend for Smoothness: If you prefer a smoother compote, blend it briefly before serving.
    • Experiment with Flavors: Try adding a pinch of cinnamon or a splash of balsamic vinegar for depth. You could add a little vanilla extract too.

    Storage

Store: Allow the mixture to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It will keep in the fridge for up to a week.

Freeze: Homemade strawberry compote freezes really well and will keep for up to 3 months. You can freeze individual portions in an ice cube tray and then pop them out of the tray when frozen and store in a freezer bag.

Defrost: You can defrost a cube or two at a time in the microwave, or leave them to defrost in the fridge overnight.
