Is Broccoli Keto Friendly?
Yes, although broccoli is not zero carbs, it can fit into a keto friendly diet if prepared in the right way. Broccoli is a very nutritious vegetable and super versatile too. I have shared below my favorite keto ways to serve it.
Nutritional Breakdown of Broccoli
The ketogenic diet typically limits daily carbohydrate intake to around 20–50 grams of net carbs. Net carbs are calculated by subtracting fiber from the total carbohydrates since fiber doesn’t spike blood sugar levels.
Broccoli is naturally low in carbs and high in fiber (and low in calories too), making it a great choice for keto eaters. Here’s the nutritional breakdown for 1 cup (91g) of raw broccoli, which is usually one serving:
- Total Carbohydrates: 6g
- Fiber: 2.4g
- Net Carbs: 3.6g
- Protein: 2.6g
- Fat: 0.3g
- Calories: 31
With only 3.6g of net carbs per cup, broccoli is an excellent vegetable to incorporate into your keto meals, as long as you are preparing and serving it in a keto friendly way.
How To Make Broccoli on a Keto Diet
Broccoli is so versatile, which makes it easy to include in your keto diet. Here are some of my favorite ways to prepare keto broccoli:
1. Roasted Broccoli with Parmesan
Toss broccoli florets with olive oil, salt, pepper, and grated Parmesan cheese, then roast at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes until crispy and golden.
2. Cheesy Broccoli Casserole
Mix steamed broccoli with heavy cream, shredded cheese, and a sprinkle of garlic powder. Bake until bubbly for a comforting side dish.
3. Broccoli and Cheese Soup
A creamy, low-carb soup made with fresh broccoli, heavy cream, cheddar cheese, and chicken broth for a warm and satisfying meal.
4. Sautéed Broccoli with Garlic Butter
Sauté broccoli in butter with minced garlic for a quick and flavorful keto side dish.
5. Broccoli Stir-Fry with Protein
Pair broccoli with chicken, salmon, shrimp, or beef and cook in a low-carb stir-fry sauce for a complete meal.
Summary
So, is broccoli keto? Absolutely! With its low net carb count at just 3g per cup, high fiber content, low in calories and numerous health benefits, broccoli is a must-have vegetable for anyone following a ketogenic diet.
Whether roasted, steamed, or blended into a creamy soup, there are so many delicious ways to enjoy broccoli while staying within your carb limits.
